MEDIA RELEASE - June 25th, 2023

MONITORING POLITICAL CONDUCT IN THE 2023 LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION CAMPAIGN

Further to our announcement that the monitoring of the 2023 Local Government elections campaign has started and that Political parties/Candidates as well as members of the public should submit information for consideration of possible breaches/violations of the Code of Ethical Political Conduct, the Council wishes to advise that to date one complaint has been received. The Council has reviewed the information submitted and is of the opinion that this complaint does not fall within the purview of the Council. Accordingly, the Council will respond to the complainant privately.

With Nomination-day being June 26, 2023, as well as the launch of the respective campaigns, the Council would like to remind ALL Political parties, Candidates, Party supporters and the public that there exists a Code of Ethical Political Conduct relating to election campaigning and the Council would plead with all to make themselves aware of the Code and, more importantly, to adhere to the Code. Acknowledging that new Political Parties as well as new Candidates will be contesting these elections, on the completion of the nomination process, the Council will transmit a soft copy of the Code as a reminder, but also for the leadership of the Parties to ensure that all Candidates are aware of the Code.

The Council seeks the support of the citizenry at large to bring to its attention possible violations of the Code. To this end, members of the public are invited to visit the Council’s website at www.politicalethicstt.org to view the Code it its entirety. Reports of possible violations of the Code, as well as any other concerns which Political Parties, Candidates or citizens may have about the Code or the Council, can be emailed to the Council at info@politicalethicstt.org.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the Council,

Dr. Bishnu Ragoonath

Chairman
