MEDIA RELEASE - December 27th, 2025

PLEASE UPHOLD THE INTEGRITY OF THE ELECTORAL PROCESS

At its first weekly meeting since the start of this period of monitoring, the Council can report that, thus far, all parties and candidates seem to be upholding the integrity of the campaign and moreso, have publicly indicated that they will be instituting a clean campaign in the run up to the Tobago House of Assembly January 12, 2026 elections.

The Council also acknowledged that all Political parties were invited to a signing of the Code, which was broadcast live on television, in Tobago, on Tuesday December 23, 2025. It must be noted that on that occasion only two of the four Political Parties participated. The Council however maintains that the invitation to sign the Code remains open to all Political Parties, and within the Tobago space, Political Parties can arrange to sign the Code by contacting Council Member, Mr Curtis Willaims at the Tobago Division of the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

Notwithstanding the general tenet of the parties to conduct a clean campaign, individual members of the Council were however advised that, primarily on social media, there have been various attempts to engage in conduct which may be deemed to be inimical to the Code. As previously stated, the Council does not have the capacity to monitor all aspects of social media and thus depends on citizens to share with the Council such specific information which may be believed to be in violation of the Code.

We again call on all members of the public to collaborate with the Council by submitting reports of possible violations to the Code. Such complaints can be made through a message to WhatsApp 793 4505 or via email to info@politicalethicstt.org. For persons who may be unsure of what may be deemed to be unacceptable conduct, all citizens are invited to visit the Council’s website at www.politicalethicstt.org to view the Code in its entirety.

As we move closer to polling day, the Council would like to remind the national community that the Code of Ethical Political Conduct, in seeking to uphold the integrity of the election process, challenges all political parties and their supporters to abide by the cardinal ethical principles of:

  • Non-discrimination on the grounds of race, ethnicity, sex, gender, class, religion or belief, or seek to mobilize support by reference to race, sex, gender, religion or class.

  • Not make false or defamatory allegations in print or speech, inclusive of images and effigies in connection with an election in respect of a Party, its Candidates, representatives or members.

  • Not seek to assassinate the character of or make defamatory comments about any individual, family, professional group or section of the community.

  • Not criticize aspects of the private lives of Candidates, their families, not connected with the public activities of the leaders or Candidates of other Parties.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the Council,

Leela Ramdeen,

Secretary
